People have at turns called this artist’s work satire, or a danger to our children, or even an attack on black culture. He’s had the opportunity to try keeping a straight face in the wake of questions and complaints of how this is affecting children negatively; an artist suggesting kids read a book rather than sell drugs to finance the crunk lifestyle… How DARE he! It’s alright that kids watch bootie shaking, Cristal drinking, and rims spinning, but this is too much?

Kids don’t understand satire? Come on. I didn’t catch who said it on the CNN video, but I thought the same thing; Mad Magazine was completely understandable as satire when I was a kid.

Watch for the audience participation as one of the dancers moves to block the IKEA worker going for the microphone near the end…

I saw this linked from Dan Piraro’s blog (Artist behind the comic Bizarro). One of the comments left there was apparently someone who can’t see the humour in the situation. Seriously; if you’re ever in need of affirmation that some people go a bit far for their candidate, stop by the LiveJournal community obama_2008 or swing by any right wing blog to see the same personality type on the other end of the spectrum.

Watching these Onion spots is nearly indistinguishable from watching Fox News… kind of creepy, but funny.

The video that brought about the realization in me (most recently… this happens all the time) that not everyone has seen everything on the internet. There’s little that we really get here in North America of what it’s like down under. Name a TV show or movie that you’ve seen lately that was made in Australia by Australians. Name an Australian music group that isn’t AC/DC and doesn’t have a song about Vegemite sandwiches. Name the Prime Minister of Australia. Name an Australian city that’s not Sydney or Melbourne.

For the Canadians in the room, think of Rick Mercer, along with 3 Rick Mercer clones and maybe Nardwuar; all accosting Prime Minister Stephen Harper on the street to yell insulting or embarrassing questions at him. This is apparently a staple part of Chaser’s War.

For Americans, there’s nothing that I really think of offhand; maybe an edgier version of The Daily Show? There’s really nothing that I can think of that compares to direct action satire like that done by the CBC in Canada and the ABC in Australia.
