BEIJING TAXI – Three taxi drivers in Beijing in the years leading up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I wondered how taxi drivers could survive with Chinese fare rates so incredibly low; we took 20-30 minute cab rides in Shanghai a couple times, and paid about $5 Canadian for the door-to-door service. At that, Shanghai’s taxi rates were significantly higher than Beijing. This shows us how a couple drivers work and live, and how they decide to approach their futures. It doesn’t really give much of a sense of the reality of Beijing traffic, which is unfortunate, but that’s something that I think would be hard to present on screen with any sense of reality.
