AMERICAN JUGGALO – This is creepier than I could have imagined. They talk about family love and how accepting they are… but then they quote lyrics that are more misogynistic than I thought possible… Good old fashioned Christian hip hop, revelling in a bit of hedonistic excess once a year.

“American Juggalo is a look at the often mocked and misunderstood subculture of Juggalos, hardcore Insane Clown Posse fans who meet once a year for four days at The Gathering of the Juggalos.”

I don’t think I misunderstood them at all… except maybe underestimating just how fucked up they are.

I’m glad it’s only 25 minutes long, but I wonder if it’s just the crazy ones that were willing to be interviewed (the seriously drug-addled, the potentially psychotic)… http://vimeo.com/29589320

WASTE LAND – The story of the process around a project by photographer Vik Muniz starts off with some scenes of Brazil’s Carnival… as the dancers finish, and they take off their costumes, and throw them right into the back of a garbage truck.

This starts out as an exercise for Vik in returning to his home land in an effort to make some pretty experimental large format works to photograph. He hopes that he’ll be able to help these people living in favalas at the edges of the world’s largest landfill. Very little ‘work’ is really done through the first half of the film, as we learn more about the workers’ backgrounds and what they want out of life. It seems like they had mostly just comes to accept their place in life; that they didn’t think beyond what they had.

Vik’s project re-introduced these recyclers to the world, and to dreams.

AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME – In a number of ways, this starts out as my favourite of the three movies; Mini Me, a better role for Scott Evil, and the whole Evil Starbucks plot point… Once you realize that Fat Bastard is going to be around for a while, though, the film’s mostly over. Other than the baby-eating jokes, he’s just not funny.
