THE GARDEN – South Central Los Angeles had a huge, 14 acre community garden on city-owned property. Residents formed a real community, working this land, and they helped to heal the neighbourhood in the aftermath of the region’s devastating 1992 riots. However, the city decided, in secret, to sell the land back to the original owner. Nobody told the farmers; they found out about the sale when they were served eviction notices from the new owner. It’s sad to see politicians and community organizations apparently conspiring against private citizens, all to advance personally; financially or politically.
