    THE TOY (Netflix) – I know that Richard Pryor films didn’t tend to fare too well with the critics or even all that well with the audiences, but I enjoyed this one as a kid. As an adult, it’s a bit silly especially with some of the sped up, keystone cops style scenes. At its core, this film is a 1980s social commentary; buying people bad, black people can be smart and educated,

    CITY PIGEONS (Netflix) – Watching this, I want to see Lester Long Bobby as Carl’s Tyler Durdan. He often appears in scenes only with Carl. Carl, driven crazy by witnessing his friend’s odd suicide goes on a murderous rampage under an imagined character named Lester Long. Well, that’s my preferred way to look at it – it makes Carl’s relationship with the FBI agent Janeane Garofalo seem a bit more interesting.

    TIME CRIMES (DVD) – Man travels back through time a couple hours, after running away from someone chasing him in the woods, trying to kill him. He heads home and finds that there’s some guy in his house with his wife. Chases him and tries to kill him… You can see where this is going. That said, this is an interesting story of a man who is his own worst enemy. Quite literally.

    KILL BILL VOL 1 (DVD) – Bang bang. He shot me down. Bang bang. I hit the ground.

    I’ve always liked film starts off with the first revenge against Copperhead in her suburban home. The whole scene is well choreographed and scripted, and I like the way the young girl changes the dynamic in the room, if only for a little while.

    The story develops well through the Elle, the waking from the coma, and so on. Then we hit the O-Ren Ishi origin story which I think screws up the flow of the story. I think we could have skipped that and moved right on to Hattori and the fight with the 88s. I think it might be part of the padding needed to make two full films out of KILL BILL rather than the one 200-minute film.

    The fight with O-Ren is one of the best bits of photography in this pair of films with the restricted colour pallette and the close-up shots.
