    1900 (TIFF Lightbox) – I really need to double check the run times before I go to movies at the Lightbox. I knew I was in for some trouble when they announced that there would be a short intermission in the middle of the film. You don’t put an intermission in a film that’s less than 3 hours… Show started at 6:30, there was a roughly 15 minute break, and I walked out the front doors of the theatre at midnight. Five hours of time. Plus a threesome in an unforgettable sex scene… sadly, the members of that were full frontal nudity with both Robert De Niro and Gérard Depardieu getting the attentions of Stefania Casini. I don’t even know if she was clothed or not, such was the horror of this short scene.

    I don’t really know Bertolucci’s politics, but I think what we see in this film can be summed up with something like this;

    1. Fascists are evil thugs without morals who think the world owes them
    2. Socialists are ideological clowns who think the world owes them

    The land owners and higher classes help orchestrate the fight between these two extremes, hoping to escape the notice of the revolution when it comes. Donald Sutherland does make for an exceptionally evil black shirt, though.
