ENTER THE VOID (TIFF Lightbox) – Go for the title credits and the first-person full screen trip the main character goes on. After that, the story and plot and characters are just bonuses. The title credits start out a bit annoying, strobing strobing strobing… but when they really take off… they cease being words and names. They lose meaning and become feeling.

If you can stay for the whole movie, you’ll see an odd, non-linear plot about some pretty serious disfunction. At the end of it all, I’m not sure if Alex is Oscar’s friend, or his father, or if Linda is his sister or his mother… I’m not sure it matters.

Graphic, surprising, odd. Definitely not for everyone.

So glad I didn’t make the midnighter of this at SxSW & ended up catching it at the Vancity instead. (Though I imagine seeing it half-sleepy would have been an interesting experience…) Endlessly cool.

It was paired here with some interesting choices–Trigger for most of its run, then I, Don Giovanni for a night or two. Wonder who made a double bill of THAT…

I have no idea how long the big drug trip Oscar went on was… 15 minutes? 2? The last bit in the neon Love Hotel just kinda dragged on and on though.

Yeah, towards the end things did get draggy, but I think
that was the point. And was it fully drug trip? Wasn’t a lot of it
based on the theory that the flashbacks one supposedly experiences
at the end of their life are like the ultimate DMT trip? Probably

It did occur to me that the whole thing might be a trip, maybe one he lived through, maybe an OD…
