When I ordered that Don Hertzfeldt DVD, I signed up for something of a package of things; an art print and a chunk of 35mm film. I can mount and frame the picture, but a chunk of film requires some special handling. I need to build a backlight of some sort, but what type….
Now, I could just build something that will continually light the film strip using power from the wall, but that seems like something of a waste, plus I wonder what effect exposure to light 24 hours per day might have on that little bit of celluloid.
Then I think of a push button on the frame that allows it to be lit up for short periods of time. Seems pointless unless I have people over frequently to interact with the art on my walls, as the novelty of hitting the button will run out for me over time.
Then I think of Fancy Shit.
Laser trip wire on the ground in front of the piece; triggers the piece to light for a couple minutes, powered by a small battery that’s charged from a discreet solar cell…
This is what happens when I get a MAKE Magazine in the mail.
I really like the laser idea.
