I’m that guy that the film industry markets to when they put together good commentary tracks on the DVDs they sell me. I’m a big fan of hearing the stories of filming while I’m watching the film with the regular film’s dialogue is displayed in subtitles. I especially enjoy the panel style commentaries like the ones that Kevin Smith has done for Clerks and Chasing Amy; it’s like a bunch of buddies hanging out watching the film, bitching about each other and the things they had to put up with during filming.

I’m really disappointed by any “special edition” film that tries to pass off a poorly done commentary track that’s nothing but cobbled together interviews from a variety of sources, and not even related to what’s happening on-screen. I seem to recall this approach on at least one Quentin Tarantino film; Reservoir Dogs perhaps?

With the popularity of “podcasting” growing as the price of home audio production plummets and the quality of the sound goes up, it’s no surprise to find DVD commentary tracks being published now. The Spoilers podcast has only released two commentary tracks so far, and I’ll have to sit down with Sin City tonight to see just how it sounds.

I’m also a big fan of good DVD commentaries and especially the panel format; for me, the panel commentaries would be the killer app for getting Simpsons DVDs, and the fact that Spinal Tap recorded a commentary on This Is Spinal Tap, in-character, seems too good to be true!

I love Prime Time Chicken too.
