The US Owns The Internet

I still don’t quite understand how this continues to this day, with the US Government deciding policy decisions in how the root domain servers are used. Maybe I should just accept our overlords and move on with my life…
Bush Administration Objects to .XXX Domains, and so they’re delayed; likely indefinitely.
Michael Gallagher, assistant secretary at the Commerce Department, has asked for a hold to be placed on the contract to run the new top-level domain until the .xxx suffix can receive further scrutiny. The domain was scheduled to receive final approval Tuesday.
“The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children,” Gallagher said in a letter on Thursday that was made public on Monday.
Newsflash; there’s porn on the internet. More bureaucrats stepping in to babysit and legislate morals because mom and dad can’t supervise their own kids.

I am a web developer, Internet programmer, and mother who does care and regulate her children’s Internet use. However, I am also a mother who has been victimized and who has had her children victimized by clever and unscrupulous web developers that use evasive redirects, to legitimate domain names, which then redirect unsuspecting Internet users to pornographic web sites. If the new domain name is approved, and used, this would not be possible. I could easily set my web browser’s preferences to disallow any and all .xxx sites from being viewed. This is not possible as the Internet is now. There is no possible way I can know and restrict every single pornographic web site’s domain name or IP.
The World Wide Web is for everyone. The .xxx domain suffix would not be an infringement on the rights or preferences of anyone. Internet users who wish to access pornographic material would not be restricted if this is their preference.
