• Microsoft has had it with spam

    Microsoft has apparently decided to lead by doing, and ignore any incoming mail to Hotmail that doesn’t have SenderID. From the slashdot story: “Some also feel that Microsoft is trying to strong-arm the industry into the adoption of an incomplete and not accepted standard.”

    For a bit of background, SenderID is patented by Microsoft, so by default the only places that will be supporting this without extra work are places that run MS mail servers. Good luck sending to a Hotmail account otherwise. Oh, if you’re an open source mail server developer, you can file an application form to beg them to allow you to add SenderID

    From the CNet Story;

    “If you receive mail forwarded through, for example, a university alumni account, the Sender ID check fails,” said Matt Sergeant, a senior antispam technologist at MessageLabs.

    I think that my favorite comment is this following one from Microsoft’s talking head… “‘Turning on the filters at Hotmail and MSN will give e-mail senders a reason to adopt Sender ID’, Spiezle said.” This of course ignores the fact that I don’t need to send email to anyone at Hotmail. Maybe it’s just time for people with Hotmail accounts to move to Gmail.
