• CSI covers bogus tech openly

    One of those crazy CSI:Miami types has a story revolving around him being a man whore, hooking up via “toothing” – you know, that totally made up use of Bluetooth technology for having anonymous sex with people that are sharing your commute on the train.

    From Wikipedia;

    Toothing is a media hoax which claimed that Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones or PDAs were being used to arrange sexual encounters.

    It appears that toothing started around March 2004, in the form of a fake forum designed by Ste Curran, then Editor at Large at games magazine Edge. On April 4, 2005, the creator of the forum admitted that the whole thing was a hoax (http://www.thetriforce.com/newblog/?p=53).

    Toothing was described as the possibility to leverage the ability of a Bluetooth device to ‘discover’ other enabled devices within a radius of around 30 feet (10 meters). Having discovered another device, the expression toothing? would normally be sent as an initial greeting.

    It’s like an adult version of AOL’s old-school A/S/L

    I neglected to mention that while they were covering bogus tech, they managed to extend a portable Bluetooth device to broadcast for a MILE. I wonder how long the batteries would last at that rate…
