• The Web is NOT the Internet

Okay, I’m used to your standard person in the world being confused by the media into believing that The Web is The Internet. I really am. It pisses me off a bit, but I can forgive Aunt Helga for confusing The Web and The Email.

What I can’t easily forgive is my fellow techs that think they know what they’re talking about when they fuck it up and try to prove their terminology is correct.

“Yeah, she’s not getting her email over the web …”

So I started mocking him that nobody gets their email over the web…

See, here’s the thing for those of you who just don’t GET IT:

    • The Internet is the huge, interconnected system of networked machines.
    • The Internet runs on basically thanks to a protocol by the name of TCP/IP.
    • TCP/IP defines certain “channels” or “ports” that things happen on…
    • Email traffic exists on ports 25 and 110 for the most part.
    • Basic Web traffic exists on port 80 primarily.
    • The most computer illiterate person out there would be forced to admit that email doesn’t go over the web if they happen on completely seperate ports.

And yet the wannabe geek here still didn’t get it.

What about web-based mail systems, like Hotmail? :)
